5 evidence-based ways to support fertility treatment

There is no single trick that makes fertility treatment work, but several evidence-based approaches can help you get the most out of it:
- Get a full evaluation first: Treatment works best when it targets the actual cause. ACOG notes that causes range from ovulation problems and blocked fallopian tubes to thyroid or pituitary problems and male-factor issues.
- Personalize the treatment plan: Age, diagnosis, and test results should shape whether you start with ovulation medication, insemination, or IVF.
- Treat underlying conditions: Conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, or thyroid disease can affect fertility, and managing them is part of treatment.
- Look at lifestyle factors: ACOG recommends a healthy diet, a prenatal vitamin with folic acid, regular exercise, reaching a healthy weight, and stopping tobacco, alcohol, and other substances before pregnancy.
- Be selective about add-ons: Newer is not always better. The UK regulator HFEA notes that for most patients a routine cycle of proven treatment is effective without add-ons, many of which lack strong evidence.
